SNAP Crisis Reveals Dangers of Lawless Administration

Because Donald Trump refuses to release federal funding for SNAP benefits during the government shutdown, more than 600,000 Coloradans, including an estimated half of whom are children, are at risk of losing access to essential grocery assistance starting November 1st.

“It’s a sure sign of political dysfunction when millions of families are at risk of not being able to feed themselves due to a lawless president refusing to take the actions necessary to fund SNAP benefits,” said US Senate Candidate Karen Breslin. “Our fascist president could care less about whether all Americans have food. His concern is with his fat cat benefactors and pals,” she said.

Even before the current funding crisis, some 13 percent of Americans face food insecurity, or some 47 million Americans. That number rises to nearly 18 percent for families with children.

In Colorado, where one in eight residents relies on SNAP, the state’s balanced budget rule and TABOR (Taxpayer Bill of Rights) limits make it nearly impossible to fill federal funding gaps, making it extremely difficult for Colorado to raise taxes or increase government spending without voter approval.

Under the new law, stricter work rules and eligibility changes could cut off food assistance for millions of households nationwide, including veterans, parents, and older Coloradans who were once exempt.

Words don’t feed families. Action does,” Breslin said. “Feeding families should be at the top of every politician’s agenda, not just at election time but year around. I am running to help ensure that no American goes without food.”

The Breslin for Senate policy team has put together a comprehensive list of local food banks across Colorado. The full Colorado Food Bank Directory is included below to assist residents in accessing local support by county.
